If you have seen the movie Lilo & Stitch you will know that “Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind…or forgotten.”
Ten years ago today one little girl joined a family. Her name was Brooklin.
Her family had waited for her, they had talked to her, they had prepared a nursery for her and prepared their hearts for her. But within a week, a funeral was being planned and all the hopes and dreams that accompanied the birth of this precious life, were laid to rest.
How? Even as I type these words I ask, how do you get through something like this?
Brooklin’s life, as short as it was, has been an incredible blessing. Brooklin was, and continues to be the inspiration and motivation that her parents, Kasey and Bert Aquilina, needed to open Greystanes Physie & Dance. Kasey has an incredible ability to love, encourage, inspire and nurture girls and women through the sport she had grown up a part of! And now, thanks to Brooklin and the courage of her family, many girls and women have been and will continue to be a part of this incredible club.
It was right before Christmas when Kasey’s physie family, Greystane’s Physie & Dance, decided to surprise her. The gift was that her students performed at the turning on of the Christmas lights at the Ronald McDonald House in memory of Brooklin. What an amazing way for this family to ensure Brooklin is not left behind or forgotten.
When I hear of individuals inviting others to join their “physie family” I wonder if it’s because they come from a club that values people. Like Greystanes Physie And Dance, each physie club has it’s own unique culture. As we step into this new year, I can’t help but think about what it means to be a part of a club. Of course we are connected because we love physie. But you can’t separate physie from the people you experience it with. Every word of encouragement, every story shared, every moment of laughter, disappointment and all the day to day moments in between that we share on facebook or over a cuppa are part of our physie experience…which sounds a lot like family to me.
Physie is so much more than a few dance steps and lycra leotards. Whatever highs and lows you experience you do so with your physie family. Together we can make sure no one is left behind…or forgotten.
In memory of Brooklin, butterflies were released at her memorial and are also a part of Greystanes logo. To support the work of Ronald McDonald House you can make a donation here.
